Golden Retrievers are intelligent dogs that are suited for a variety of activities. They are always in good moods and are willing to play. Yet, breed owners should keep in mind that training is very important for these dogs. It is unwise to devote all time to play to the detriment of training. Golden Retrievers should be trained from an early age.

One of the basic obedience skills is coming up to the owner. Golden Retrievers are happy-go-lucky dogs that tend to be unruly when not properly trained. It does not necessarily imply that the dogs will display the signs of aggressiveness. The breed is known for its friendly personality. However, a disobedient dog is sure to be hard to stop from impulsive deeds. Thus, when greeting people, a Golden Retriever can jump on them and soil their clothes. Who would enjoy such an outburst of emotions? However, the dog should not be blamed. Its misbehavior is the result of a poor training.

The importance of training is hard to overestimate. Breed clubs and organizations suggest that Golden Retrievers should pass a CGC (Canine Good Citizen) test. This test evaluates the dog's ability to behave in public places. The dog should react adequately to a touch, sound, and other stimuli. Golden Retrievers that successfully pass the test get the CGC designation.
