The history of Golden Retrievers can be easily traced. Lord Tweedmouth was the first person to breed a wonderful dog displaying perfect retrieving instincts needed during hunting so popular at that time. He crossed a Tweed Water Spaniel to a Yellow Wavy-Coated Retriever in the second half of the 19th century. Much later the breed was registered by the AKC and acquired enormous popularity thanks to its remarkable physical qualities and outstanding personality.

Retrievers are second to none as guide dogs. Their willingness to please the owner, friendliness towards strangers and many other traits make it a precious pet for the handicapped. Surely, the Golden is not born with all the necessary skills. It takes time and a considerable effort to train a good guide dog.
There are special schools that deliberately select a puppy at the age of 7-10 weeks old. It goes then to a volunteer foster family that provides housing, care and affection. A young dog then undergoes a course of training which lasts for about 4-5 months. If you are want Golden Retrievers as guide dogs or have an inclination to act as a foster family please contact a local breed club.
Pedigree dogs can take part in GRCA (Golden Retriever Club of America) sanctioned events. Thus, Golden Retrievers with outstanding qualities can acquire the Outstanding Sire and Outstanding Dam titles, as well as the Show Dog Hall of Fame, and others.
