This breed was developed in the 19th century and was registered by AKC in 1927. It is classified as gun dog or sporting breed; the original function of the breed is retrieving the killed game on both land and water. These dogs have several adaptations to perform this task. They have a dense double coat that repels water and allows the dog to swim even in cold water. Their neck and jaws are very strong to be able to carry the game for a long time.
