GRCSA is dedicated to the improvement and promotion of the breed in the country, educating and encouraging breeders, exhibitors and owners to abide by the standards. The organization also supports competitions and shows to promote public interest in the breed. The first dog of this breed arrived on the continent in 1950, and the popularity of the breed began to grow rapidly. In 1971, the GRCSA was organized. The breed council was established in 1995 and the first championship show was hosted in 1996.
